Siding is installed over the vapor barrier. Proper siding installation is the first line of defense from exterior water intrusion. To hold the siding tightly in place we nail it directly to the framing/studs using the proper fasteners. The use of galvanized or stainless steel nails is recommended as other types of nails will rust and break over time. Stainless steel is the best choice for siding nails, which is what we prefer to use.
Proper spacing helps to make the siding attractive as well as preventing unnecessary water intrusion. There are many kinds of siding such as cedar, fiber cement, aluminum, and vinyl which are the most popular. Each has its advantages and disadvantages. Cedar for example is an all natural product and has been a popular siding option for decades. Fiber Cement siding products are resistant to rot and will not combust in fire. Aluminum siding is much like vinyl and has many of the same features but is resistant to warping and rust. Vinyl siding has become popular because of its general lack of maintainence that is required.
